Practical Strategies for Everyday Communication
Families play the most important role in helping children learn to talk and listen.
Language grows best through daily routines, play, and shared experiences.
These strategies make every moment a chance to connect, communicate, and learn.
Talk During Daily Routines
Children learn language through reptation and real experiences. Talk about what's going on during routine activities like eating, taking a bath, or getting dressed (Hadley et al., 2020). Describe actions, name objects, name objects, and ask simple questions.
Example: "You are putting on your red shirt. Where are your shoes?"
Encourage Turn‑Taking
Conversation is a two-way activity. Children should be encouraged to take turns answering, listening, and speaking (Paatsch et al., 2019). Pause after you speak- think gives them time to think and reply. Use games, songs, or stories to practice turn-taking naturally.
Example: My turn to say the animal sound- now your turn".
Use Gestures and Expressions
Children understand more when you use gestures, facial expressions, and tone (Cologon & Mevawalla, 2018). Children can connect words to meaning by pointing, grinning and displaying delight. Children who utilize multiple languages or are still learning to speak can also benefit from gestures.
Example: Wave when saying "bye-bye" or nod when saying "yes".
Read and Talk Together
Reding is one of the best ways to build language. Pick books with simple text and illustrations. Ask questions, talk about the story, and connect it to real life (Palmer et al., 2014).
Example: The dog in the story is running- just like our dog.
Respond to Children’s Communication
When children try to talk, gesture, or make sounds- respond warmly (Hadley et al., 2020). Show curiosity, extend their sentences, and repeat what they have said. This encourages them to keep communicate.
Example: Child says" car"- you reply, " yes, a big red car".
Everyday interactions are powerful learning moments.
When families talk, listen, and respond with warmth, children feel valued and confident.
Language grows naturally through love, play, and connection.
